Project GetSTEAM is all about Girls (ages 8-15) Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering Art, and Math. Sessions will occur on selected Saturdays from 10am-12pm, at Indiana YMCA and other field trip locations. Science, technology, engineering and math are lucrative and needed fields. In fact, 80% of future jobs require skills in these subject areas and earn a salary almost double what is offered in jobs without these skills. However, while women make up approximately 51% of the American population, recent statistics reflect that only 10 percent of high school girls show an interest in science, technology, engineering and math, an approach referred to as a STEM education. Moreover, studies also emphasize that arts or humanities training is necessary to prepare youth for a “world in flux.” Considerable research indicates that if we add the arts in the mix to form STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math – we may be more successful in encouraging the participation of girls and underrepresented students. Therefore, we, the Indiana County NAACP, WIN (Women in NAACP), the Indiana AAUW (American Association of University Women), the Alice Paul House and Saint Francis University in conjunction with several community partners are offering an exciting new initiative for girls, 8-15 years of age. The initiative is designed to encourage participation in STEAM. We want to give girls a chance to fully participate in jobs requiring STEAM and make sure they are prepared to enter an increasingly diverse workforce.
Among the plans for monthly meetings are a diverse core of special STEAM-related activities, including guest speakers, field trips, a Draw-A-Line Contest, Pen Pals with an Afghan girls’ orchestra composing with technology, a self-defense class, and a Girls’ Celebrity STEAM Event. The goal of our program is to provide a fun, interactive, and hands-on program for girls exploring STEAM.
Project GetSTEAM has met on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 from 10am – 12pm at the Indiana YMCA, Sat, Oct. 20, from 10am – 12pm at St. Andrews Village in the Community Learning Center, and for various social outings. Look for our future meetings and field trips.
